For the best free information I have found out there is Funeral Home and Cemetery records. Each funeral home and cemetery keeps their own set of records of the person they handled.

I do suggest writing to them and asking them (very politely) for any information they might have on your ancestor. Give them as much information on the person in question as you have. Some funeral homes and cemeteries have their index by year of death others have it by surname. Also state how you are related to the person in question.

Just remember that the older the record the less likely they are to have it. I have also found out that each record is different. Some funeral homes and cemeteries will just confirm that they handled the arrangements of your ancestor and some will send you a wealth of information.

After finding out that I had several family members buried at one cemetery I usually send them a check for their time and troubles to be put to use for the perpetual care of the cemetery, but this is not mandatory.

Also, the funeral home who handled your ancestor may be out of business now, but some other funeral home may have those records, so don't give up.
